The closest key to any key is the half step hence, C to B makes a half step down and similarly C to C# makes a half step down.

In addition, there are sharps and flats. To sharp a key you must move one half step upwards, hence if you move one up from C it would be C# which is a sharp. # is used as a symbol for flats.

Similarly when you move one half steps downwards, it makes a flat key. Again in case of C, when you move one half steps downward, you land up on a white key, which is a C flat. B is used as a symbol for flats. There are total of 5 sharp notes and five flat notes.
